WinMagic and Datakey Team to Add Smart Card to Data Security
Abstract:
- WinMagic of Mississauga & Datakey of Minneapolis partner to offer an attractive data security product combining the convenience of Smart Cards and the impenetrable security of full disk encryption. Users will need both a smart card and a password in order to boot the PC.
- WinMagic's both disk encryption products are the only ones on the Canadian Communication Establishment's (CSE) list of pre-approved products in that category.
- Datakey is a pioneer in developing smart card-based solutions that identify users conducting business over the Internet. With a decade head start, Datakey's technology has proven that with PKI smart card solutions work with more applications than any other.
- SecureDoc 2.5 is the first disk encryption software utilizing the highly secure 256-bit Rijndael AES algorithm, recently approved by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology.)
- The 13th Annual Canadian Information Security Symposium runs from June 11 to 15, 2001 at the Ottawa Congress Centre, Canada, hosted by the CSE, Health Canada & the Government of Ontario. It is the premier Canadian forum for the promotion, education, and advancement of IT issues, trends, and developments.
MISSISSAUGA/MINNEAPOLIS, June 13, 2001 - WinMagic Inc. and Datakey, Inc. (Nasdaq: DKEY) announced today that the Datakey CIP system has been integrated with WinMagic's SecureDoc 2.5 disk encryption software as its core component. The new offering provides the advantages of increased security combined with enhanced user convenience and the support of PKI applications.
Datakey is a leading, international producer of smart card-based user authentication and data privacy for business conducted over the Internet.
WinMagic's SecureDoc disk encryption software has gained international recognition with governments and the private sector. It has received Common Criteria status - a stringent set of standards created for security products, together with its FORTEZZA-card based version, are the only two in their category to be on the CSE (Communications Security Establishment, Ottawa) list of pre-approved products.
James Armstrong, WinMagic V.P. of Business Development commented, "By adding Datakey's proven smart card technology to SecureDoc 2.5, we have demonstrated our continuing commitment to developing the most secure data encryption solution for protecting disk drives. The result is an overall product technology offering a high level of security, trust and convenience and a major interest to both our existing and prospective clients. We selected Datakey's smart card based on its credentials, which include FIPS 140-1 validation and its wide acceptance in targeted markets.
"By partnering with WinMagic, our joint customers now can take advantage of a robust, smart card-protected solution for encrypting the contents of their disk drives," said Colleen Kulhanek, Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Datakey.
Datakey and WinMagic have worked closely over the past few months for the integration. Since both companies design their products to strictly adhere to the PKCS #11 standard, integration was fast and seamless.
SecureDoc 2.5 for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 will be showcased at the 13th annual CSE IT Security Symposium in Ottawa opening today. It is also the first disk encryption on the market that employs the Rijndael AES 256 bit algorithm, the newly NIST approved standard for higher security.
The selection of the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) marks the culmination of a four-year effort involving the cooperation between the U.S. Government, and private industry and academia from around the world to develop an encryption technique that has the potential to be used by millions of people in the years to come.
