WinMagic Inc. Unveils “Compartmental SecureDoc”, Another First in Disk Encryption Technology.
Mississauga, Ontario, April 14, 2003 – WinMagic Inc., developer of the most advanced disk encryption software in the industry, today announced the beta release of another innovative variant, Compartmental SecureDoc. Users can divide a laptop or PC’s hard drive into compartments and create 2 or 3 computers within one machine, with separate access, each controlled by powerful encryption.
Protection of information has never been so secure, convenient and cost-effective:
- The hard drive can be divided into two or three compartments.
- The user can select which compartment to use when booting the PC.
- Each compartment is separate to ensure confidentiality and safety. For example, if a virus infects one compartment the others remain unaffected.
- “Tools of entry”, be it a password or a token, used to authenticate access to one compartment cannot be used for another compartment.
- The data of one compartment are encrypted with keys different from the others. The separation is not only through access control (data of other compartments are hidden), but also via encryption.
The list of applications for this software extends from the mobile user, relying heavily on his laptop, to the small office/home office with one computer for both office and private use, to government agencies, controlling many levels of security on their machines.
With Compartmental SecureDoc, the telecommuter can safely work on the road or at home without compromising the company’s information, use the same laptop for his own private correspondence, financial transactions, etc., and never mix the two, or three fields. A doctor, for example, can reserve one compartment for confidential clients’ data and another for personal use – on the same PC, worry-free because everything is encrypted and strictly separated.
In large enterprise deployment, an administrator can divide the computers’ hard drive into compartments, encrypt them, and then assign different access to each employee depending on the contents in the compartments.
Possible applications in governmental use also include multi-level security systems where one or multiple users handling sensitive or secret information can be assigned to compartments according to their security access privileges, all on the same machine.
“We believe this is the first software based solution of its kind“, says Thi Nguyen-Huu, WinMagic’s CEO. He adds: “This makes compartmental feature also available to laptop computers while existing hardware solutions only apply to desktops. Software provides convenience, portability and offers more options than hardware. With customer feedback, we will continue to add even more flexibility and yet preserve security that is the hallmark of SecureDoc.”
