WinMagic Integrates the US DoD Common Access Card (CAC) with its SecureDoc Disk Encryption Software
WinMagic's SecureDoc becomes the first and only product to perform all authentications at pre-boot level utilizing the CAC card.
Mississauga, Ontario, February 9, 2004 - WinMagic Inc. has released a new version of SecureDoc, which utilizes the certificate from DoD PKI to encrypt computer hard drives. It is the first and only product to perform all authentications at pre-boot level. Pre-boot level includes first looking for the card reader and identifying it, next, passing the user's password to login the CAC card and utilizing the on-card RSA (private) PKI key to decrypt data; then and only then SecureDoc has the key to access the disk.
The DoD CAC Card integrated with SecureDoc disk encryption software permits only authorized users to boot up their PCs or notebook computers authenticating and authorizing users for secure access to their encrypted hard drives. This provides an added measure of security, especially for mobile workers who have a higher risk of having their notebooks lost or stolen.
Having spent considerable R&D on integration, and as such is the only disk encryption software to work with hardware tokens and PKI: WinMagic's solution can be deployed on thousands of computers centrally, even without users having to physically return the CAC card for reconfiguration by the administrator. SecureDoc Enterprise obtains user's digital certificates from DoD PKI LDAP server to encrypt computers remotely. WinMagic is currently in the process of testing this new product for interoperability with DoD PKI, which provides certificates validation including CA signature check, revocation check through CRL and other DoD requirements.
"WinMagic's solution can benefit all DoD Military computer users. By further leveraging the Common Access Card (CAC), we now offer the complete encryption package for workstations and mobile users with dual factor authentication at boot logon," stated Jim Armstrong - WinMagic's US Military Specialist - DoD CAC Integration. "Other disk encryption vendors know well the importance of pre-boot access with tokens, but only WinMagic has gone the extra mile and succeeded to incorporate this technology to work with different readers and smart card vendors to achieve this functionality." Jim further said, "This is not the first time WinMagic's products have been offered to the Department of Defense, earlier versions of SecureDoc included a FORTEZZA based hard disk encryption which uses (FORTEZZA) DoD PKI. This FORTEZZA SecureDoc version is certified by the NSA as the RASP Secure Media to protect up to SECRET data for US Government Agencies."
SecureDoc presently has FIPS 140 -1 Level 2, NIST AES accreditation (certification number 1) and is currently undergoing testing under Common Criteria EAL-4 (completion expected by summer/04).
