BIOS Mode Drives

The BIOS Mode drives are intended for users whom are comfortable setting and using system BIOS passwords, and do not need or intend to have enterprise IT management support of their encrypting drive.

These drives are also useful for embedded, non-PC applications such as printers and copiers where PC management software is not present.

Some customers have purchased BIOS Mode models and attempted to install software to manage their encryption passwords. However, these two models do not work with software; their passwords can only be managed via the system BIOS password.
Seagate has issued a bulletin to our distribution partners and recommended steps be taken to clarify these models and avoid selling the wrong drives to users expecting enterprise management capabilities.

Enterprise Mode Drives

Drive encryption passwords for Enterprise Mode drive models are managed by software, which is sold separately by Seagate's software partners. If you have installed Seagate Certified software on your drive and it is not working as expected, please first check that you do not have one of the BIOS Mode drive models cited above.

If software has not been installed, these drives can be locked and unlocked via BIOS passwords.
