There have been many high profile breaches in 2014: Home Depot, Target, and the most recent, Sony Pictures Entertainment. These breaches clearly illustrate that there is much work to be done across all business sizes.

There is a continuous struggle to properly address and asses these deficient areas when it comes to data security. One of which that needs to be addressed is controlling and tracking sensitive data. According to a recent report released by cybersecurity firm Trustwave, 63% of businesses do not have fully mature methods to control and track sensitive data, and even more disturbing, 19% have no methods at all.

Another major factor is that only 51% use partial encryption to store sensitive data, and in some cases no encryption at all! In a lot of these cases this is due to organizations lacking “the necessary talent, skills and budget to properly address security in-house”. Businesses that fall into this category need to partner up with a trusted security expert to manage and secure their data, which can prove to be very beneficial in the long run. After all no business wants to be in the spot light for a major data breach, and if you do not have the resources to protect yourself, partner up with someone that can, it’s only smart business.
