Who gives you advice on mobile device security? Unless that person is an expert in the field, he or she is most likely giving you the wrong information. We’ve compiled some of the worst advice we’ve ever heard about mobile device security – read on to learn why following it can actually do more harm than good.

“Don’t Bother with Updating Your Software”

Ask yourself if the person giving you this tip is actually a hacker. Out-of-date software is frequently vulnerable to exploits and malware. That means that it makes it easier for hackers to infiltrate your device and even your network.

Update your software and firmware often. The only time it’s a bad idea to update is when there’s been a backlash against the new software and firmware. Then, wait until the problem is fixed to download.

“All Apps Are Perfectly Safe”

Again, this sounds like something a hacker would say in order to fool you into downloading something that will do serious damage to your device. Apps are not created equally. If you or your employees are downloading apps outside of the app store, there’s a good chance that they could be infected with malware.

Don’t download apps unless they come from an app store. That’s the most trusted source for mobile device apps.

“You Don’t Need a Mobile Device Management Solution”

This could come straight out of a hacker’s mouth, too, but it’s also a popular stance amongst business leaders who want to save money and don’t understand mobile device security. A mobile device management (MDM) solution distributes applications, data and patches.

Why do you need an MDM solution? It enables IT administrators to keep corporate devices safe, which protects the company’s networks.

“Encryption Is Just for the Military and Government”

Years ago, encrypting data (which means transforming it into an unbreakable code) was only something that governments and militaries did. That’s definitely not true today, though – many businesses use it on a daily basis.

Encryption keeps information safe. Unless you’ve got the encryption key to decipher the code, you can’t read it. So, encrypting data keeps it safe from hackers and criminals.
