When your PC goes into recovery mode, it could be due to a number of issues. Perhaps the company's password security policy locks users out after a specific number of failed sign in attempts. Or it could be that the PC has encountered an unexpected configuration change, hardware malfunction, or security event.
Whatever the case, a BitLocker recovery key ensures that each device can only be unlocked by an authorized individual, limiting who gains access to encrypted data.
Recovery lockouts are common, and can become rather time consuming – especially with just the traditional native OS encryption offered by BitLocker at your disposal.
BitLocker recovery: Instructions to users
If your PC is connected to a domain, you have to contact an administrator to access the recovery key. If it isn’t, you’ll have to find it by:
- accessing your Microsoft account online and BitLocker recovery keys from another mobile device or workstation
- accessing a saved copy of the recovery key from a printed hard copy, a USB flash drive or another file
If the key is saved to a file or printed, you’ll need to locate the copy, follow the instructions on your PC and enter the key when prompted. Alternatively, if the key is saved to a USB flash drive, you can follow the instructions on your PC to manually enter the key.

Drawbacks to using BitLocker on its own
